You’ve got questions. We’ve got bison.
Everything you wanted to know about FIELD, tallow, ingredients, melting, scents and the occasional jar that spent too long in a hot mailbox.
A few reasons.
First, we think bison are extraordinary.
They’re built for open land. They roam, graze and eat what grows beneath them, and their relationship with the field is at the heart of FIELD.
But we also chose bison because when we started making skincare with its tallow, we loved how it felt.
To us, it was silky, rich and refined.
We wanted natural skincare that felt elevated rather than crunchy, and bison gave us exactly the starting point we wanted.
Want the whole story? → WHY BISON?
Yes, they come from different animals with very different histories and ways of living.
Bison have undergone far less domestication and selective breeding than cattle and retain the roaming, grazing behavior they’ve had on North American grasslands for thousands of years.
Their fat composition can also vary based on what they eat and how they’re raised.
But mostly, because we preferred it.
We’re not claiming bison tallow is magically superior to every beef tallow. When we started working with bison tallow, we simply loved how it felt to us: silky, rich and refined.
That mattered because FIELD was never going to be natural skincare you had to compromise to use. Bison also belongs deeply to the FIELD story. The animal, the open land, the roaming, the field itself.
It all fits.
Oh yes.
Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids and acts as an emollient, helping soften dry skin and keep moisture in.
That’s why FIELD feels especially good on skin that is dry, tight, rough or just generally asking for a little help.
Nope.
Properly rendered bison tallow has a very mild natural scent. Our scented products smell like their FIELD, not like bison.
And yes, we’re very grateful for that.
Yes. Always.
Bison tallow isn’t a trend ingredient for us. It is the foundation of FIELD.
As we grow into new kinds of skincare, every FIELD product will begin with bison tallow.
No bison, no FIELD.
Anywhere your skin needs moisture.
Face. Hands. Elbows. Knees. Legs. Cuticles. Dry patches.
Start with a little and go from there. Tallow is rich, and a little FIELD really does go a long way.
Yes.
Our whipped tallow balms can be used on the face or body. Start with a very small amount, warm it between your fingers and press it gently into skin.
Everyone’s skin is different, so if you’re sensitive or trying FIELD for the first time, patch testing is always a good idea.
It’s rich, but we work very hard to make sure it doesn’t feel like you rubbed cooking fat on your face.
Our whipped balms use jojoba and arrowroot to create a softer, silkier feel, and they’re designed to melt into skin beautifully.
The trick is simple: use less than you think.
Less.
Seriously.
Start with a pea-sized amount or smaller, warm it between your fingertips and add more only if your skin wants it.
Because FIELD is made by hand in small batches with real fats and oils.
Natural ingredients can vary slightly, and temperature can change the texture of tallow. Your jar may be a touch fluffier, softer or firmer than the last one.
Still FIELD. Still wildly good.
No.
Tallow is a natural fat, which means it softens and melts when it gets hot. A warm mailbox or delivery truck can occasionally turn your beautifully whipped balm into a much less beautifully whipped balm.
Let it return to room temperature, or place it somewhere cool until it firms back up.
The texture may change, but the product is still good to use.
Keep it somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.
Your bathroom cabinet or nightstand is great. The dashboard of your car in August is less great.
Our current whipped balms are designed for a shelf life of about 12 months when stored somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Not much. That’s the point.
Our current whipped balms start with bison tallow, jojoba oil, beeswax, arrowroot, rosemary extract and vitamin E, with thoughtfully chosen scent ingredients depending on the formula.
Future FIELD products may require different ingredients to do their job beautifully, but the approach stays the same:
Jojoba helps give our rich bison tallow a softer, silkier glide on skin.
It’s one of those quiet ingredients that makes the whole experience better.
Just enough structure.
Beeswax helps give FIELD its balm texture and staying power without turning it hard or waxy.
Feel.
Arrowroot helps give our whipped balms that soft, silky finish we obsess over.
Because skincare should work beautifully and feel beautiful.
It helps protect the fats and oils in the formula from oxidation.
Tiny ingredient. Important job.
Natural is important to us, but “natural at all costs” is not our standard. Wildly good is.
We favor simple, naturally derived ingredients wherever they do the job beautifully. If a safe, well-understood ingredient materially improves the performance, stability or safety of a future formula, we’re open to using it.
Every ingredient still has to earn its place.
Want to know more? → OUR APPROACH
Our current anhydrous balms don’t contain water, so their preservation needs are very different from a cream or lotion.
We use antioxidant ingredients such as rosemary extract to help protect the oils and fats in the formula.
As FIELD develops new products, we’ll choose appropriate preservation systems based on what each formula actually needs, with a preference for simpler, naturally derived options wherever they work well.
FIELD is still a small-batch company, and our testing and formulation standards will continue to grow with us.
As we develop more advanced products, formal stability, safety and performance testing will become an increasingly important part of how we build them.
Quiet is inspired by Montana after dark.
Lavender, sandalwood and frankincense. Soft, grounded and calm.
Not lavender laundry detergent. Think open windows, cooling air and a very quiet night.
Range smells like being outside.
Bergamot, clary sage and cedarwood give it a bright, green, expansive feel inspired by sun-warmed grass and open range.
Warm, soft vanilla inspired by those enormous Montana skies and puffy clouds that seem to go on forever.
Our vanilla is meant to smell warm and natural, not like frosting or synthetic perfume.
No.
We want you to notice them when you open the jar and use the product, not have your skincare enter the room before you do.
FIELD scents are designed to feel close to nature and close to skin.
